Stripe and Paradigm Launch Tempo: A New Blockchain for High-Speed Payments

Stripe and Paradigm have unveiled Tempo, a next-generation blockchain purpose-built for high-speed payments. Currently in closed beta, the network is being tested for money transfers, cross-border transactions, and B2B payments.

Strategic Partnerships and Early Backers

Tempo is backed by an impressive roster of partners, including Visa, Deutsche Bank, Shopify, Nubank, OpenAI, and Revolut. According to Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Tempo is envisioned as a first-layer payments-focused blockchain, optimized for large-scale financial applications.

“Tempo is an independent company, with Stripe and Paradigm as its first investors. It’s built to deliver real financial services at scale,” Collison emphasized.

The initiative is led by a small, agile team of fifteen under the leadership of Matt Huang, Paradigm’s co-founder. Notably, other partners such as Anthropic and DoorDash have also joined the ecosystem, signaling broad adoption potential across industries.

Key Features of Tempo

  • Unmatched Performance: Capable of processing over 100,000 transactions per second with finality in under one second, thanks to a dedicated payment channel.
  • Stablecoin-Native Infrastructure: Transaction fees can be paid directly in stablecoins, removing reliance on native tokens.
  • Integrated Market-Making: A built-in automated market maker (AMM) supports liquidity and enhances efficiency.

Paradigm’s Huang highlighted the timing:

“As stablecoins go mainstream, there’s an urgent need for infrastructure purpose-built for them. Tempo combines Stripe’s expertise in global payments with Paradigm’s depth in crypto innovation.”

Broader Context

Stripe’s push into blockchain is not new. In June 2024, the company partnered with Coinbase to integrate the Base Layer 2 network into its crypto payments products. By June 2025, Stripe acquired Privy, a crypto wallet developer, further strengthening its digital asset strategy.

Why It Matters

Tempo joins a growing field of stablecoin-centric blockchains competing to reshape cross-border payments. With its focus on speed, scalability, and real-world financial services, Tempo could become a pivotal player in redefining how money moves globally — bridging fintech efficiency with blockchain innovation.
